Love, in Spanish…Amor En Español

I fell in love with Love In English over the summer. It is quite possibly one of the sweetest love stories I have ever read. It was unconventional, in the sense that no one ever wants to admit to falling in love the way that Vera and Mateo did, it is “frowned” upon. But if I believe anything I believe that you can not help who you fall in love with nor can you help falling out of love. That said the follow-up to Karina Hale’s beautifully written Love In English left me wanting…needing more.

The book picks up where Vera and Mateo left off in L.I.E but from Mateo’s POV. It takes you through the ups and downs of starting over after a bitter divorce and it certainly doesn’t help that not only is there a child involved but the paparazzi (soul stealing leaches) too. I feel every emotion that Mateo conveys and at times I was actually moved to tears, not the Kim Kardashian ugly cry tears, but tears nonetheless. The story is so beautifully written that you can’t help but sympathize with the new couple as they struggle with a vindictive ex-wife, deportation, paparazzi and a new time-consuming job.

As I neared the “climax” of the story I held my breath, wiped my tears and starting sending silent little “omg’s” to the literary Gods in hopes that the peak and decent to this epic love story was going to leave me with the biggest book “O” face that I’ve ever had. Although it was good it was not great. It was not what I expected or what I needed after reading such beautiful words, after feeling such a wonderful myriad of emotions. I needed…MORE.

Alas everything isn’t always about me. Maybe if I think about it the best solution to a problem is often times the simplest. Maybe Ms. Hale knew that with all that these wonderful characters have suffered that the fix needed to be as pure and simple as their love for each other? 4.5 out of 5 stars for my new book boyfriend husband Mateo. That’s right I said husband because for a man to love as fiercely and wholly as he loved, you have no choice but to keep him forever.

“Our journey has never been easy. The only thing easy in all of this is my love for her. It is pure, it is simple, and it is true” -Mateo
