Synopsis: On May 15, 1975, fifteen-year-old Ginny Lemon is abducted from a convenience store in Fort Lauderdale by a member of one of the most notorious and brutal motorcycle gangs in South Florida.
From that moment on, her life is forever changed. She gets a new name, a new identity and a new life in the midst of the gang’s base on the edge of the Florida Everglades—a frightening, rough and violent world much like the swamps themselves, where everyone has an alias and loyalty is tantamount to survival.
And at the center of it all is the gang’s leader, Grizz: massive, ruggedly handsome, terrifying and somehow, when it comes to Ginny, tender. She becomes his obsession and the one true love of his life.
So begins a tale of emotional obsession and manipulation, of a young woman ripped from everything she knows and forced to lean on the one person who provides attention, affection and care: her captor. Precocious and intelligent, but still very much a teenager, Ginny struggles to adapt to her existence, initially fighting and then coming to terms with her captivity.
Will she be rescued? Will she escape? Will she get out alive—or get out at all? Part psychological thriller, part coming-of-age novel, filled with mystery, romance and unexpected turns, Nine Minutes takes readers into the world of one motorcycle gang and inside the heart of a young girl, whose abduction brought about its fall.
Review: Holy shiitake Mushrooms…I purchased this book in February of this year and never got around to reading it. The ladies of Book Talk decided we were going to do a group read of this book which was done in June. This book is A-MAZ-ING! I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about it; well for a few reasons, one of them being the time setting…um I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to relate to things of the mid-late 70’s as I am an 80’s baby. Also I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about the “emotional manipulation” of it all and bikers..other than Sons of Anarchy I know nothing except the leader is usually hot.
Boy was I wrong and I’ve never been so happy to be wrong. This book was so great from start to finish that I wasn’t able to follow the rules of group read which was to stop reading to discuss the book at certain points as we went along. I couldn’t put this book down. Each character was so intricately written and placed throughout this story I didn’t have a favorite nor could I pick one. I wanted to hate Grizz but fell in like with him, I wanted to love Grunt but then hated him, I wanted to feel sorry for Ginny but couldn’t.
I just loved this book all the way around. I was on such and emotional roller coaster and I didn’t want to get off. I was cursing some things and praising others. I was completely freaked out at times and then complacent at others. This book really does have it all, including a cliff hanger. That’s right folks and as much as I am not a fan of cliff hangers this one was “slap yo momma” good. I literally jumped up from the sofa and yelled…and I quote ” YOU’VE GOT TO BE F**KING KIDDING ME!” Yeah it was that good. So folks this was a 5++ read and you better buy it now before Out of Time releases
