I didn’t plan on him….
Or for him.
Or anything that had to do with Cal Donovan from Boston.
Meeting him had been a complete and utter surprise, taking me completely off guard. I met new people every single day in my line of work and none of them affected me. Wasn’t that the way of things though? You could meet a thousand people and none of them would mean anything to you, but then you’d meet one and they suddenly meant everything.
I was a self-professed workaholic. When did making yourself your number one priority become such a horrible thing? I wasn’t entirely sure, but I learned fairly quickly after my last breakup that men didn’t like being second on a woman’s priority list. And they seemed to be intimidated by a motivated female, calling me things like “hard to handle,” “challenging, ” and “difficult.”
Being single seemed to work best for me and I had no plans on changing my relationship status anytime soon.
And then I met Cal.
And he f*****g ruined everything.
Review: This was good read although very confusing and I’ll tell you why… our heroine was a damned liar. Okay, maybe that was a bit harsh. She just wasn’t who she said or thought she was so I spent the majority of the time trying to figure out who she really was.
Jules, a California real estate agent, was in Boston on a Real Estate retreat where she meets Cal. She is a self-proclaimed workaholic and doesn’t want a relationship so meeting Cal seemed perfect because he was the exactly the same way. They hit it off one night at a hotel bar and what starts out as a supposed one-night stand turns into a week of time spent together.
**SPOILER ALERT** please forgive me for this because I can’t back up my claim if I don’t tell a bit of the story…Before they do the do*wink wink*…Jules tells him that sex means too much to her to just give herself away on a whim, which Cal totally respects. They spend the week getting to know each other and lots of making out ensues. Granted the chemistry was great and they were totally digging each other but if you’re not looking for a relationship why start something with someone who lives thousands of miles away? Why not go for the quick screw and move on? Because you’re a closet romantic, Jules, like all us girls and you were just in denial. Now, Jules prides herself on not being the clingy, mushy, fall so in love with a guy that he becomes all consuming; but that is exactly what she does…from the very beginning. Granted it’s a long distance relationship so it was a bit easier for her to “put him second” but she never really did that either. From the moment she and Cal met they were inseparable and there is nothing wrong with that except it wasn’t in line with what she “stood” for. I get it, maybe the douchecanoe she was with in the beginning just wasn’t her cup of tea. But you weren’t fooling me, Jules…I had your number from “I can’t do this” **END SPOILER**
Cal is the man and that also means he isn’t too good when it comes to communication. He started off strong and then, of course, he does what most men do and effs it up. This, my friends, is where all the angst comes in. I totally felt Jules’ pain when things when from WTH to WTMF! Yeah, I wanted to throat punch Cal, however, his make-up skills weren’t too shabby. 3.5 stars for this long distance love story. You will fall his love with Cal’s gay bestie and Jules’ wild-eyed best friend as well.
