13…Review

13CoverFront.5Blurb: “Fake it till you make it.”

A notion I once considered utterly ridiculous. Until one crazy night with a mysterious man resulted in a social media frenzy that had the entire entertainment industry talking. Seems a fake marriage was just what my career needed to make Hollywood come knocking.

Convincing him to continue the charade was almost too easy. The chemistry between us made it impossible to keep my hands to myself. But it was all just pretend, right? Love was never in the script.

That is, until he re-wrote it.

13 Reasons You Should Stay:

  1. I’m crazy about you
  2. I make you laugh
  3. You totally dig me

EXCERPT:

The first thing I noticed were his eyes. Bottle green with the tiniest flecks of copper scattered throughout, and when the light hit them just right, those flecks sparkled in the most intriguing way. His shaggy caramel-blond hair stuck up in all directions, as if he’d been running his fingers through it all day, and the longer I stared, the more I found myself wanting to do the same thing. Tattoos circled both of his wrists, and his ears were pierced and adorned in black onyx. He had a smile that could simultaneously melt your heart and panties. Everything about him screamed male model, and if he wasn’t, then he sure as hell should be. He was that gorgeous. The bar was packed, and he was seated close. So close his muscular thigh pressed tightly against mine, making it impossible to ignore his presence. Not that I wanted to or anything.

By the time I finished examining him, I looked up and found his pouty lips were puckered as if he was deep in thought. Either that or he was thinking about kissing me. Yeah, I knew we hadn’t been formally introduced, but I’d definitely consider kissing those lips. His gaze was intense, and it roamed my entire body, slowly, as if he were cataloging every detail for later when he was alone and naked in the shower. The thought of him naked, alone or otherwise, excited me.

“No one special.” I fidgeted in my seat. “Old boyfriend.”

“If you ask me, he’s a dumbass for letting you get away. You’re much prettier than candy.”

Another blush heated my cheeks as I shook my head and responded, if only to keep him talking, “Ahh, but you haven’t seen this particular piece of candy.”

“Don’t need to. He gave you up. In my book, that’s reason enough to achieve asshole status.” He winked and tipped his glass to mine. “But, thanks to his assholery, you’re here with me. So… to assholes.”

Okay. He was definitely flirting.

Review: Well…what can I say about this, other than it is a pretty good in-between read, not to mention, this is book 2 in The List series and of course I didn’t read book 2. This isn’t one of the “you must read this in order to read that” situations. It is clear that you can read each as a standalone and that works for me.

Anyway, I enjoyed the story. It isn’t original, but it is definitely done well. I effing LOVE Hawk…Sophie, not so much. I know a lot of people couldn’t care less if a character is likable or not, and honestly, it doesn’t make or break a book for me most of the time and in this case, I didn’t mind Sophie, I just didn’t like her and found her annoying AF. She is too needy and naive, and for the life of me, I don’t understand how having a fake boyfriend/husband makes you more attractive to Hollywood execs?? In what world do sex and scandal not sell and make you more attractive? Erm…Kim K. is worth billions because she rocked Ray J’s mic people HELLLLOOOO!!

Overall, it is probably a good 3.5 stars. I like it enough to say go for it, just be prepared for the typical insta-love romance novel.

Lead Me Home…Review

ALJackson-LeadMeHomeBookCover525x8_MEDIUMBook Blurb: Fourteen years ago, my life changed forever.

My sister disappeared. That day I was selfish. That day I chose myself over her. And that day, I lost everything.

Including Nikki Walters.

She’s the girl I’ve loved my whole life. She’s gorgeous. Caring. Every single thing I’ve ever wanted but denied myself. She was my sister’s best friend, and I destroyed any chance of keeping her.

When her safety is threatened, I have a second chance to do the right thing. But as soon as she moves in, I want her in all the wrong ways.

All it takes is a brush of her hand, and I’m losing all control.

The fire between us is only burning hotter.

But neither of us saw what was coming.

And it just might be Nikki Walters who destroys me in the end.

Review: I’ve managed to fall in love with all of the characters in this small town that A.L. Jackson has created. I’d read her before but I’ve only just met these characters when I picked up Follow Me Back. Now, this is a series but each story can be read as a standalone, as each character has their own story to tell.

Everyone has a “thing” especially when it comes to family. We all have that thing that will trigger an argument, a smile, some tears…something when it comes to family, close family. And the disappearance of his sister was something that Ollie didn’t see coming, can’t seem to get over, and blames himself for. I couldn’t help but feel so bad for him the entire time I was reading. His pain was palpable. I understood his need to “find” his sister, the case had gone cold and his mom blamed him for not looking out for his little sister. He has issues and deservingly so. The only thing I hated was how he kept denying himself love because he felt he didn’t deserve it but at the same time one of the things I LOVED was how his loyalty to his sister came at the expense of his own happiness. Everyone deserves to be a little selfish at times but his one moment of selfishness cost him so much and according to him he can’t let it happen again. But the angsty romance lover in me wants it to happen SO BAD.

Nikki is great too! I loved both of these characters. She is fun-loving, but behind that facade, you can see the hurt she harbors for what she believes is unrequited love. Nikki, Ollie, and Sydney were all best friends until Syd disappeared and for some reason, Ollie doesn’t think her loss is as big as his. The best thing about this story, IMO, is the stuff happening in the background. Nikki helps out at a center for abuse and the girl that she helps as well as her grandma falling ill brings out things that I didn’t see coming. I mean boy did I NOT see it coming. It started to make sense the further I got along in the book, and when the final piece clicked in place, talk about BAM. I was devastated and relieved all in the span of a chapter. In true romance form we get out HEA but man the ride there was a bumpy one. I really enjoyed this book. Now, I have to go back and read book 1 because I have fallen in complete love with this series. 4.5 stars for this A.L. Jackson masterpiece.

Until There Was Us…Review

I know, I know. I’ve been missing in action, but I have been reading and this is one that I received an ARC for. Some of you may be familiar with Samantha Chase’s, Montgomery Brothers Series, and this is book #7! Somebody’s mama was busy AF LOL!

UntiltherewasUsNEW FINALBlurb: He’ll have to play his cards just right for her to take a chance on him…

Megan Montgomery has always been careful…except that one time she threw caution to the wind and hooked up with a sexy groomsman at her cousin’s wedding. But that was two years ago—so why can’t she stop thinking about Alex Rebat?

Alex has been living the good life. He loves his job, has a great circle of friends, and doesn’t answer to anyone. The problem? There’s only one woman he wants and she ran out on him after one amazing weekend. But now that Megan’s coming back to town, Alex hopes he can convince her to take another chance on him…and on a future that can only be built together.

UTWU Teaser 10

Excerpt

Alex was drinking coffee and looking out at his backyard. He loved his home, his property. Living in the suburbs was something he had always wanted to do, and when he found this house, it had everything he needed—lots of green space and room for him to put in the pool he now had and the kind of landscaping that ensured his privacy. He wasn’t antisocial or trying to avoid his neighbors, but he had thought if he was able to work with clients out of the house, they’d appreciate the privacy.

With June almost here, the weather was starting to turn warm, and he’d opened up the pool the previous weekend. The water level was perfect, and so were the chemical levels. The pool was heated, and maybe in another week or two, he’d be able to start using it.

Off his back porch was a hot tub, and for now that worked fine.

He was considering changing and doing a little soaking when his phone rang. When he saw Megan’s name on the screen, he was pleasantly surprised.

“Hey,” he said when he answered and hoped his enthusiasm wasn’t too obvious.

“Oh my God, Alex,” she began breathlessly. “I’ve lost Maylene!”

“Um…what?” She immediately relayed what had gone on, and she was getting to the point of near hysteria. “It’s going to be all right.”

“You don’t understand, Alex! I had one job to do— one stupid job!—and I screwed it up. I have to find her, and I have no idea where to look!”

He was already grabbing his keys and locking up the house. “I’m on my way. I’ll be there in ten minutes, and I’ll be on the lookout for her as I drive over.”

“What do I do? Where do I even begin to look for her?” she cried.

“Go and grab her leash and start walking up one side of the block and then down the other. I’ll be there as soon as I can. I promise.”

He heard the shaky breath she let out. “I have to find her, Alex,” she said quietly. “I can’t believe I lost her.”

“You haven’t lost her, Megan. She’s a handful— Ethan talks about that all the time. She’s gotten out before, so we will find her. Trust me.”

“I…I don’t know…I’m not sure where to even start…”

At that moment, he hated how he wasn’t there already with her. He could hear the devastation in her voice and knew she was going to have a serious meltdown any minute. “Megan,” he said, his voice going firm and authoritative, “you need to do what I’m telling you. Get Maylene’s leash, and then start walking down the block to the right of the house. I have a feeling that’s the direction she’d go in first. Start there, and I’ll be there as fast as I can.”

That seemed to work because by the time she hung up, she sounded a little more in control of her emotions. Back when they had dated—and he used the term loosely—he had never seen Megan get emotional. She got frustrated, sure. But never emotional—never to the point of tears. And he wasn’t sure how to react to it. His initial response was…well…it made him like her a little more. It softened her and showed how she wasn’t as cold as she’d seemed when they had ended things.

That memory instantly got pushed aside because now was not the time to be focusing on it. The important thing right now was to get to her and help her find Maylene.

Luckily, traffic was on his side, and he didn’t hit any red lights and turned onto Summer’s block six minutes later. Alex immediately spotted Megan and pulled over, rolling down his window. “Megan! Hop in! We’ll hit the other side of the street now.”

Nodding, she quickly jogged over and climbed into the truck. It was pointless to ask if she’d had any luck— the simple fact that there wasn’t a dog on the end of the leash told him she hadn’t. He pulled over close to the right side of the road and drove slowly. They each called out to the dog as they went. After two blocks, Megan rested her head on the back of the seat and sighed loudly. He pulled over.

“It’s no use,” she said miserably. “She’s gone. She’s just…she’s gone! I’m going to have to break it to Summer that I lost her dog!” She looked over at him, her brown eyes brimming with tears. “She loves that dog! Do you have any idea how much this is going to kill her?”

Unfortunately, Alex did know how much Summer loved her dog, and no doubt this was going to be devastating for her. Reaching over, he took one of Megan’s hands in his and gently squeezed it. “We’re not giving up, okay? We’ll keep driving around. We’ll knock on doors. We’ll put up posters and post on social media if we have to. I’ll drive around all night if that’s what it takes. All is not lost here, okay?”

The hesitant look on her face told him she didn’t think it would do any good, but he refused to quit. Not after only two blocks! With her hand in his, he started driving and was relieved when she turned and called out to Maylene again.

They drove for several more blocks and then turned around and made their way up the other side. By the time they were back in front of Summer’s, Alex decided to pull into the driveway and park. “We’ll knock on doors now,” he said.

“Maybe we need to go off the block,” she suggested.

It was possible, he thought, but he had a feeling if they were on foot, they’d have more luck. “Why don’t you go and grab a handful of her treats? This way if we spot her and she thinks we’re playing, we can lure her over with a snack. What do you think?”

“Sounds good.” Megan took off up the driveway, and Alex watched her disappear around the back of the house and into the yard. A minute later, she called his name, and he quickly jogged back to her. At the gate, he spotted her pointing to the far corner of the deck. When he stepped closer, he started to chuckle. “Don’t you dare laugh.”

He knew she was trying to sound intimidating, but there was a hint of laughter in her own voice.

There, sitting in the corner of the deck in Ethan’s hammock, was Maylene—peacefully sunning herself. Alex glanced at the dog and then to Megan. “Um…”

“She was not there earlier. I swear.”

“Okay.”

“I’m serious, Alex! She didn’t come when I called her, and she wasn’t there when I brought the mail in and put it inside either of the houses. I heard her barking when I came out of the main house, but by the time I came out of mine, she was gone!”

“I believe you,” he said carefully and took a step closer to her. “I’m sure she was just playing with you.”

She shot him a bland look. “Seriously? That’s what you’re going with?”

He laughed a bit, unable to help himself. “I’m not sure what else I can say. The thing we should be focused on here is that she’s not lost. She’s home and in the yard, and even though I happen to know for a fact that Ethan doesn’t like her sitting in the hammock, it’s better than the alternative.”

Review: I was not a fan. Now, hear me out! The book started so slowly that I fell asleep every time I tried to get started, but once I finally made it passed the wedding scene I was able to get through it. Doesn’t mean it picked up that much but enough to keep my attention. I did a lot of skimming because the amount of detail the author includes is crazy. Like she describes EVERYTHING. That’s not a bad thing but it isn’t always a good thing either.

Then there was the b*tch known as Megan. Man did I really unlike her character. She was just unlikable. Even after she “softened” I still couldn’t bring myself to give a single eff about her. Wait, I know you don’t have to like a character, bottom line is if they make you feel anything the author has done their job, however, for me, I like to enjoy a character even if it’s the villain or the person I’m supposed to hate. This chick is the heroine and I couldn’t stand her.

Now Alex, I absolutely loved. He is a perfect character and has major BBF potential. Why he was so in love with Megan, I cannot fathom. But, this is a Montgomery story, and since that is her last name she has to get her man. Alex saved this book from a one-star death IMO. I hate giving one-stars, hell I hate giving bad reviews but this one wasn’t my cup of tea. So, 2 stars for the 7th installment of the Montgomery Brothers Series. I will read this author again because one bad apple won’t spoil this bunch
